Less than 10 minutes away by car from the port of St John’s, Fort James Beach is not only an idyllic getaway, it is also teeming with history and sights of the Fort.
In 1706, the foundation stones were laid for Fort James. Upon completion of the fort in 1739, it became customary for every vessel passing to pay a fee, or risk being shot at by one of the fort’s 36 cannons.
Later, between 1948 and 1969, ships that ferried the Windrush generation to the UK berthed before setting off on that long and fateful journey.
It is a unique story with great historical significance. Fort James, attracts international celebrities, a global audience as well as a local crowd.
